Here’s exactly what we’ll cover during the POWER Your Public Speaking course:

POWER Your Public Speaking

5 Easy to follow steps on preparing, organizing, and polishing a powerful message that can increase the success of your organization and the trajectory of your career.

PREPARE: Preparation and practice are necessary to ensure you deliver your message with confidence. Invest in your success.

ORGANIZE: Organization leads to confidence. Confidence leads to a strong performance. A strong performance leads you to greater things.

WOW PART 1 & 2: An overwhelming factor in how effective you are as a public speaker is in how people experience you. Ask yourself how you are going to stand out from your colleagues in this event, even if it is your staff meeting. How are you going to look like a leader today?

ESTABLISH CREDIBILITY: Your audience includes people who are listening to your speech, working with you on a project, deciding who will win the next promotion, choosing allies at work, and selecting the top candidate for a job. Establish your professional image through your content, tone, and word choices. Look like you have it under control and could take on more.

RELAX: The confidence that comes from knowing you are ready – practicing, having notes at hand, power posing, breathing deeply and steadily enough to keep oxygen flowing to your brain, and visualizing success - can make a powerful difference if you have been letting public speaking anxiety keep you from career building opportunities.

Deliver Your Message

How to deliver a powerful message no matter the venue or format - video presentations, traditional venues, media interviews, moderating panels, and more! Topics like:

DELIVERING A SPEECH: How are you going to share your enthusiasm so your audience will hear your message, and follow up on your call to action? Tailor your message to the audience. Identify your main points. Tell people why they should care.

VIDEO CONFERENCE ENGAGEMENT: Connecting with an audience through a screen requires a different skill set than commanding a room of live, actual people. When you speak through a video conference, you lose much of your ability to read the room. Ask yourself ahead of time how you are going to keep your audience engaged throughout your presentation.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF: Start with the big picture by saying what you work on, not just your title and affiliation.
Make it a conversation starter. Then establish your credibility and tell people why they should
care.

MODERATE A PANEL: Your role as a panel moderator is to advocate for the audience. Consider yourself as a talk show host spurring a lively and unpredictable conversation. Build in audience engagement for live and online events. Keep everyone on topic and on schedule. Prepare closing remarks on the spot by writing down notable comments along the way.

MEDIA INTERVIEWS: Before you agree to a media interview, determine your goals. Ask yourself how you are going to make the most of this opportunity. Research the journalists and their news outlets. Shape quotes by developing ways to deliver your messages through stories, relatable statistics, and sound bites. Anticipate challenge questions. Practice.

JOB INTERVIEWS: PROmote, PROtect, and PROceed. Share your best attributes. Prepare yourself for difficult or awkward questions. Develop answers to a broad range of standard questions. Identify
examples from your work and life experience you can use to be prepared to answer questions.

I am thrilled to share the completion of a public speaking course offered by Spokesmith. This public speaking course has provided me with tangible tools to become a more effective speaker. The course is easy to take because it is in short segments that are fun to watch (Eileen Smith is such an engaging speaker). I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to hone their skills as they move up in their careers.

- Hadeil Ali, Deputy Director, Diversity and Leadership in International Affairs Project, Center For Strategic International Studies

"It was such a pleasure to work with Eileen! She ran two public speaking and executive presence workshops for Council on Foreign Relations term members and I continue to receive high-praise from those who participated. Eileen practices what she preaches, so her presentation is fun and easy to listen and relate to throughout the workshop. She engages with her audience, gives them practical tips and constructive feedback, and everyone left the workshop with something tangible they could implement immediately in their daily lives. The skills Eileen teaches truly are the difference maker in careers and anyone who takes part in one will walk away feeling that they have made a positive step toward career advancement."

- Meaghan Fulco, Director, Meetings and Term Member Program, Council on Foreign Relations

"Thank you so very much for a phenomenal public speaking session this evening! Even though the Zoom format would be challenging for most presenters, your warmth and enthusiasm came right through everyone’s screens, and you held everyone’s attention throughout! You especially helped the group establish camaraderie and have fun in the second half of the session (no small task, since our group has never met in person)!"

-Jennifer Gordon, Managing Editor and Senior Fellow, Global Energy Center, Atlantic Council

"Eileen's program, hosted by the Harvard Club of Washington, DC and co-sponsored by the Columbia Alumni Association of Washington, DC, was the most highly subscribed of all the weekly programs we have done over Zoom since the pandemic began! The presentation on How to Project Executive Presence on Zoom was marvelous and received nothing but high praise. The content was extremely practical and artfully delivered. Participants stayed long after the presentation to ask questions and talk with Eileen. The program was highly rewarding and we are very grateful for the time you spent with us."

-Caren A. Pauley, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Harvard Club of Washington, DC

Eileen’s public speaking training sessions were a highlight of our curriculum.  All of our students said they would recommend Eileen's course to a colleague.  Her individual encouragement and personalized feedback made every single student feel more prepared for public speaking engagements.  Her thoughtful guidance and warm personality created a comfortable practice environment, and I already feel a marked improvement in my public speaking abilities. Thank you, Eileen!”

- Ali Corwin, Program Manager, Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy, Center for Strategic and International Studies

"Our team of consultants works with clients in many high-stakes or high-pressure situations and the messages we deliver are just as important as the manner in which we deliver them. Eileen’s workshop with our team was exceptional. She tailored it to the specific challenges we face and highlighted ways to improve our delivery and presence in these scenarios. Everyone who participated was clearly energized by the presentation and workshop, and afterwards the team was buzzing about lessons that could immediately apply to our work. Even a week later we still had people power-posing around the office."

- Eben Kaplan, Manager, CrowdStrike

"It seems everyone I talk to wants me to express appreciation for your inspiring presentation on Tuesday. Your years of experience, your depth of understanding of people, and your ability to present in such an interesting way produced one of the most memorable evenings in our group's history. I personally appreciated your approach to the three points we need to remember for an impactful elevator speech."

-Ashley Wilson, Vice President of Congressional and Public Affairs and Head of Women Taking the Lead, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

"During this COVID-19 pandemic, we moved all classes online. Students still needed to deliver presentations covering their research topics. Eileen gave an exceptional training exercise that provided pointers for virtual presentation, demonstrated the techniques she advocates, and engaged the entire class. We cannot thank her enough for this informative, educational lecture. Every single student in the class was able to list several ways that Eileen's presentation helped, and all of them gave her an "A"!"

-Jeannette Wick, Assistant Director, Pharmacy Professional Development, University of Connecticut
